The Tata Sumo, India’s first locally designed utility vehicle, dominated the MUV segment until the Toyota Qualis arrived in the early 2000s. Named after Sumant Moolgaonkar, former Telco chief executive, the Sumo was a milestone in Indian automotive design.
The Sumo Deluxe, launched in 1996, became a hit, achieving one lakh sales faster than the Maruti 800, India’s then-best-selling car. In 2001, Tata introduced the Sumo Deluxe Turbo, featuring a turbocharged diesel engine and added features for improved performance.
The Sumo Deluxe made its appearance for a few minutes in the 2002 movie Road.
