Standard Herald | Movie 'Thalayana Manthram'

One of the iconic cars that gained popularity in the 1970s was the Standard Herald sedan. Manufactured in India by Chennai-based Standard Motor Products India Limited (SMPIL), the Herald was originally a model from British carmaker Triumph.

Initially, Standard Motors imported parts from Britain to assemble the car but later introduced modifications to better suit Indian conditions.

The Standard Herald featured a four-seater, two-door design and was powered by a petrol engine. Its early models came with a 948-cc engine delivering 34.5 bhp. The car used a traditional body-on-chassis construction, complemented by an independent suspension system that set it apart in terms of ride comfort.

Following the Herald, Standard Motors also introduced other models to the Indian market, such as the Gazel and the Standard 2000.

The car you see here appeared in the 1990 Malayalam movie 'Thalayana Manthram'.
