LML Buddy: India’s Forgotten 3-Wheeler

The LML Buddy was a commercial three-wheeler designed to bridge the gap between traditional cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws, offering a payload capacity of 350 kg. Although launched around 2016, it appears to have been sold only in select markets — I’ve personally never seen one in person, though I do recall coming across an advertisement a long time ago.

The Buddy was offered with 150 cc petrol and 200 cc CNG/LPG engine options. It featured four forward gears, a deck size of 1200 mm x 1100 mm, and leaf spring suspension for handling heavy loads. A passenger variant of the Buddy was also available.

Interestingly, the model was also designed with export markets in mind. The export version had a few visual differences compared to the Indian version — it came with square-shaped turn indicators and a body-colored front mudguard, while the Indian model featured round indicators and a black mudguard.

Unfortunately, the Buddy didn’t perform well in the market. One of its major drawbacks was the open cabin, which offered little protection for the driver against harsh weather conditions.

If you happen to own an LML Buddy or have seen one recently, do share — we’d love to see it!
