Arjun 500: The Unknown Classic

Back in the 1990s, when I used to read Auto India magazines, I often came across ads for a vehicle called the Arjun 500. It always stood out to me. It looked like a basic version of the Omni van — no doors, a soft top, and a very simple, utilitarian design. It was available in both passenger and pickup variants, clearly built for rural use. At the time, we had a 3-wheeler Bajaj Tempo Minidor with a similar purpose, so the Arjun 500 felt familiar in that way.

Years later, today, while revisiting those old magazines, I came across the Arjun 500 again. And once more, I was struck by how little information exists about it. It’s as if the vehicle just vanished over time.

I’m not entirely sure what engine it used, but I vaguely remember — maybe from an article or a random discussion — that it might have been powered by a Greaves diesel engine. I can’t say for certain, though.

If anyone out there has more details about the Arjun 500, has seen one, or has any photos or info to share, I’d love to hear from you. It’s one of those forgotten vehicles that still sparks curiosity.
